A CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system is the central database where your go-to-market teams track contacts, accounts, opportunities, and every interaction with prospects and customers. In B2B operations, the CRM is the system of record for revenue — if it’s not in the CRM, it didn’t happen.

CRM matters in GTM operations because it’s the foundation that everything else is built on. Pipeline forecasting, activity tracking, lead routing, territory management, commission calculations, and reporting all depend on accurate CRM data. A well-maintained CRM gives leadership visibility into the business. A neglected CRM gives everyone bad data and broken processes.

In practice, the CRM serves different purposes for different roles. AEs use it to manage deals and track where each opportunity stands. SDRs use it to log outreach activity and hand off qualified leads. Marketing uses it to track campaign influence and lead lifecycle. RevOps uses it to build reports, manage processes, and maintain data quality. Customer success uses it to track renewals and expansion opportunities.

The most common CRM platforms in B2B are Salesforce (dominant in mid-market and enterprise) and HubSpot (popular in SMB and mid-market). The platform matters less than how well it’s configured and maintained. A perfectly set up HubSpot outperforms a messy Salesforce every time.

The perennial CRM challenge is data quality. Reps resist manual data entry, fields get stale, duplicates accumulate, and reporting becomes unreliable. The best GTM ops teams reduce manual entry through automation, enforce data standards through validation rules, and make the CRM useful enough that reps actually want to use it.
