Enrichment Waterfall

An enrichment waterfall routes contact or company data through multiple providers sequentially to maximize data coverage and accuracy.

An enrichment waterfall is a data enrichment strategy that routes a record through multiple data providers in sequence, using the first provider that returns a valid result for each field, and falling through to the next if it doesn’t.

This approach exists because no single data vendor has complete coverage. Provider A might have strong email data for enterprise companies but weak coverage for SMBs. Provider B might be the opposite. By chaining them together in a waterfall, you maximize the chance of getting accurate, complete data for every record.

Here’s how it works in practice: a new lead comes in with just a name and company. The waterfall first checks Provider A for the email address. If Provider A returns nothing, it checks Provider B, then Provider C. The same logic applies for phone numbers, job titles, firmographic data, and other fields. Each field can have its own provider priority order based on which vendor performs best for that data type.

The business impact is significant. Teams using a single enrichment provider typically see 60-70% coverage rates. A well-configured waterfall can push that to 85-95%, which directly translates to more leads your SDRs can actually contact.

The tradeoff is cost and complexity. You’re paying for multiple data subscriptions, and you need logic to manage the routing, deduplication, and conflict resolution when providers return different values for the same field.

Modern data enrichment platforms handle waterfall logic natively, letting you configure provider priority and field-level routing rules without building custom integrations.
